Jehangir Art Gallery is a gallery situated in the capital city of Maharashtra, Mumbai. It was founded by Sir Cowasji Jehangir and it was named after the late son of its founder, Jehangir. It was built in the year 1952. The gallery came into existence due to the persuasion of K. K. Hebbar and Homi Bhabha to Sir Cowasji Jehangir. The interior of the gallery is mesmerizing and even the exterior looks fabulous. It was designed by G. M. Bhuta for G. M. Bhuta & Associates.

Historical background of Jehangir Art Gallery

Jehangir Art Gallery was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Mumbai, B. G. Kher on 21st January 1952, in the memory of the late sir of Sir Cowasji Jehangir. This gallery celebrates the renaissance of Indian art. Some important structures of importance are situated in this very complex.

Architecture of Jehangir Art Gallery

Jehangir Art Gallery has in total four exhibition halls housed in it which showcase visual art. These four exhibition halls are known as Exhibition Gallery, Auditorium Hall, Terrace Art Gallery for photography and Hiirji Jehangir Gallery. This gallery is one of the early concrete structures present in the city of Mumbai. Jehangir Art Gallery is a striking example of an early modernist notion of inward looking galleries. It was actually turned inwards due to its combined function of an auditorium and an art gallery. The entrance of this gallery is very attractive indeed and has a large wavy cantilevered entrance which very well embraces the street.

Jehangir Art Gallery houses a café in its premises which goes by the name Samovar which is reminiscent of the socialist culture of 1970s.

In addition to the café, Jehangir Art Gallery also houses the Natesans, the country’s oldest licensed antique dealers.
