Joc Pederson hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, beating host Atlanta Braves 3-0 against Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of the National League Division Series on Monday afternoon.
Pinch hitter home run was his second in the series. He also started a solo shot from Adrian Houser (1-1) at the opening loss of Atlanta’s 2-1 series in Milwaukee on Friday.
Right-handed Ian Anderson (1-0) hit three hits and hit six innings in five innings for the Braves, who had a 2-1 lead in the best five series. Atlanta aims to punch tickets to the NL Championship Series for the second consecutive year in Game 4 on Tuesday.
The Brewers finished with five hits in the middle of making two consecutive 3-0 decisions.
Right-handed Hauser reassured starter Freddy Peralta to start the fifth inning, immediately surrendering the single to Travis d’Arnaud and Dansby Swanson. Pederson, who beat Anderson, stepped up and crossed the wall on the right wing to throw a 1-2 fastball from Hauser, leading the Braves 3-0.
Three rescuers filled the gap with Will Smith. Will Smith retired from the side in the 9th inning to secure a second save in the series.
Due to a runner’s failure, Atlanta was unable to start scoring in the second inning.
Austin Riley and Adam Duvall scored a single to lead the innings before the former reached third place on Eddie Rosario’s flyout. Riley appeared ready to score in a flyout to D’Arnaud’s left fielder, but Milwaukee outfielder Christian Yelich said Duval on second base before Riley denied a run across the plate. Thrown.
Despite having runners on second and third bases without outs, Brewers’ bid to open the fifth goal was inadequate. The ground out, Luis Urías’s fielder’s choice in devastation at home, and the lineout ended the threat.
Shortstop Swanson began double play at the end of the inning in the eighth inning to thwart another threat from Milwaukee.
In the second inning, longtime Braves and Hall of Fame Chipper Jones were unable to catch the foul ball on the stand. Ironically, the eight-time All-Star former NL MVP doesn’t have a Gold Glove in his impressive resume.
