Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in “Fantastic Beasts and the Crime of Grindelwald”.
Actor Johnny Depp will no longer wear the Warner Bros. Dark Wizard’s Gelato Grindelwald robe. The movie “Fantastic Beasts”, the actor, was released on Friday.
“I would like to inform you that Warner Bros. has asked me to resign because of my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts. I respected and agreed to that request,” he posted on Instagram.
Depp’s exit occurs days after he loses a defamation proceeding against The Sun, a British tabloid that published an article in 2018 claiming that the actor was a “wife beater.” Depp will appeal the decision.
Warner Bros. replayed the role and said the film would debut in the summer of 2020.
The “Fantastic Beasts” franchise is the prequel series of five films set decades before Harry Potter was born.
Since its debut in 2016, the franchise has faced severe criticism from fans and industry critics. It’s enough for Warner Bros. to bring Steve Kloves, who helped adapt the original “Harry Potter” book to the film, to help writer JK Rowling in the script for the third film. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them” and “Crime in Grindelwald” were not based on books written and published only by Rolling.
It’s no surprise that Kloves was added as a writer for “Fantastic Beasts 3”. Critics panned “Grindelwald’s crime” and fans barked at plot points that changed some norms. The film has an overwhelming score of 37% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Not only that, “Crime in Grindelwald” had the lowest box office revenue of any “Harry Potter” movie in the United States and internationally. It was only $ 160 million domestically and just under $ 500 million in overseas markets. International box office revenue helped boost the film beyond the $ 200 million production budget, but it’s a small show compared to other franchises.
By comparison, movie fans around the world invested more than $ 814 million to see “Fantastic Beasts and their Places” in 2016 and more than $ 1.3 billion in 2011 to die in the original series “Harry Potter and the Deathly”. I watched the final movie of “Deathly Hallows: Part 2”.
Filming of “Fantastic Beasts 3” began in the spring of 2020 and was scheduled to arrive at the theater on November 12, 2021. However, the shooting was stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic. The movie is currently watching a summer 2022 release.
The film is set in Rio de Janeiro, starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander and Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore. Ezra Miller (Credence / Aurelius Dumbledor), Alison Sudol (Queenie Goldstein), Dan Fogler (Jacob Kowalski) and Katherine Waterston (Tina Goldstein) are also back.
It is unknown who Warner Bros. is looking to take on the role of Grindelwald. The world of Harry Potter is full of magic and potions that can change the way people look, so it’s easy to explain the changes in actors. In fact, in the first “Fantastic Beasts” film, Grindelwald was portrayed by Colin Farrell, who pretended to be a member of a US-based magical organization known as the United States Magic Council.
Disclosure: Comcast, the parent company of NBC Universal and CNBC, owns Rotten Tomatoes. NBCUniversal licenses “Harry Potter” rights at theme parks.
