Those familiar with this decision say Denver’s Nikola Jokić won the Best Player Award for the second year in a row after a season that ended in an unprecedented number in NBA history.
The NBA was preparing to officialize the announcement in the coming days, perhaps this week, according to someone who spoke to the Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity, as the voting results haven’t been announced.
ESPN first reported that Jokić was nominated as an MVP, citing sources. The Nuggets’ 7-foot center was a player who surpassed 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in the first season of league history.
Jokić has improved point and rebound production from the previous year. Jokić rebounded the game with an average of 27.1 points and 13.8 rebounds and contributed to the contest with 7.9 assists.
Joel Embiid of the 76ers Center and Forward Luka Doncic of the Mavericks were also considered strong candidates for this award.
