Minneapolis (AP) —Jury verdict on Tuesday in a murder trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin. George Floyd’s deathA black man fixed on a pavement with his knees on his neck in a case that began a fierce review of racism and police in the United States
The verdict, which arrived after about 10 hours of deliberation over two days, was to be read in the far-off city late in the afternoon, in opposition to the possibility of further anxiety as it happened last spring.
The courthouse was surrounded by concrete barriers and razor wires, and thousands of state guards and other law enforcement officers were brought in before the ruling.
Floyd died last May after Chauvin, a 45-year-old now-dismissed white police officer, fixed his knee to the neck of a 46-year-old black man for about nine and a half minutes.
A jury consisting of six whites and six blacks or multi-ethnic people examined two alleged unintentional murders, three murders, and two manslaughter charges. The most serious charges are up to 40 years in prison.
Early on Tuesday, Weighted by President Joe Biden By saying that he believes the case is “overwhelming.” Other politicians and the general public also expressed their opinions.
Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar said at the Brooklyn Center in the suburbs that “there shouldn’t really be questioned if there are acquittals or verdicts that don’t fit the scale of the crimes committed.” Minneapolis. Lawmakers said the Chauvin case appears to be opening and closing.
She said the conviction could mark a turning point in the fight for racial equality.
“We are looking for support from each other. Hopefully this verdict will come soon and the community will begin the healing process,” Omar said.
In Washington, the president spoke with Floyd’s family on Monday, saying, “I can only imagine the pressure and anxiety they are feeling.”
“They are good families, and whatever their verdict, they want peace and tranquility,” Biden said. “I hope the verdict is the correct one. In my opinion, it’s overwhelming. I won’t say it unless the jury is now quarantined.”
The president repeatedly accused Floyd of his death, but previously stopped commenting on the trial itself.
Prior to the verdict, several shops boarded Minneapolis, the courthouse was surrounded by concrete barriers and razor wires, and National Guard patrols. Last spring, Floyd’s death triggered protests along with vandalism and arson in Minneapolis.
The city is also recently on the edge over the deadly police shooting of a 20-year-old black man, Don’t Wright, at the Brooklyn Center on April 11.
