Kansas governor vetoes ban for transgender school athletes | News – Kansas City, Missouri

Topeka, Kansas (AP / KCTV) — Governor of Kansas Laura Kelly has rejected measures to ban transgender athletes from girls’and girls’ school sports.

Democratic Governor’s actions on Thursday prevented conservative Republicans from making Kansas the latest state with a GOP-controlled legislature to enact such a ban, with more than 20 people doing it. It was investigated.

Kelly’s veto was widely anticipated as it labeled the bill “regressive” and suggested that it would undermine the state’s ability to recruit.

Conservative Republicans did not have the two-thirds majority required in both chambers to veto when they passed the veto earlier this month.

KDP (Kansas Democratic Party) Chairman Vicki Hiatt issued the following statement after the veto.

“SB55 is an exaggerated bill designed by Kansas Republicans to openly tease children while undermining Kansas’ economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic. Kansas is a comprehensive nation and we We should continue to focus on including all students in our extracurricular activities. Thanks to Governor Laura Kelly, this regressive and biased bill will not come true. “
