Katie Larson, Assistant Director of Academic Advisoring at CEHHS, has been selected as an Academic Advisor of the Year. She will be awarded the award at the Senate / Staff Advisory Board / Academic Advisory Board banquet on May 16th.
Academic advice is recognized as “the very heart of a successful institutional effort to educate and retain students” (Tinto, 1987). It may be “the single most underrated feature of a successful college experience” (Light, 2001).
The Advisor of the Year Award was created to recognize and recognize the following advisors:
- Contribution and service to students, and academic advice on campus
- Best practices for advocacy and collaboration for students, and academic advice
- Initiatives and Attitudes to Improve Academic Advice
Katie’s nominee describes her as an advisor who takes her one step further for her students. One of her student nominees shared Katie, “I realized that my age and experience are my strengths and that I can do this.” She is a great resource for both her students and her fellow advisors. She has also been pointed out by several nominees that her core strength lies in her ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in print. It’s natural for her to build relationships.
Katie not only serves students and departments, but is also active on campus and in professional associations. She previously belonged to the Academic Advising Council Executive Team and is now a member of the Global Community for Academic Advising (NACADA) as a committee and writing group. She had just returned from the NACADA Region 6 conference, where she presented her research.
