Hello Lihue (KMTV) — The Kauai Police Department in Hawaii (KPD) issued a news release on Saturday calling for the public to help locate a missing University of Nebraska student.
23-year-old Samuel Martinez reportedly flew to Kauai on May 12 for hiking and camping on the island. He was reportedly scheduled to return to Nebraska on May 25, but allegedly missed the outbound flight.
The missing person case was initially reported to Lincoln police. Nebraska police contacted KPD on May 27, at which point various external assistance reports were produced and investigations on the island began.
According to preliminary reports, flight records and safe travel records show that Martinez actually landed on Kauai on May 12, and was screened for entry into the island at Lihue Airport. Further investigation revealed that Martinez had eight individual permits to camp in different parts of the island, including Koke’e State Park and the Kalalau Trail.
Multiple attempts to contact Martinez have failed and investigations are ongoing. Martinez is about 6 feet tall and weighs about 180 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone who has information about Martinez’s whereabouts on Kauai will be prompted to call KPD ((808) 241-1711). Those who wish to remain anonymous can report the information to the Crime Stoppers Kaua Eagle ((808) 246-8300 or cskauai.org).
