At least four killed in overnight fire at electric bike repair shop in New York City

At least four people were killed and five injured in a fire at an electric bike repair shop in lower Manhattan early Tuesday morning, officials said.

Officials said two of the injured were in serious condition and one of the dead was a 71-year-old man.

FDNY Deputy Director John Salocco told reporters that firefighters responding to a call at 12:15 a.m. found and extinguished the blaze at the electric bicycle repair headquarters on the first floor of the six-story building, but it was violent. He said smoke spread over the rest of the building. That’s where seven of the wounded were found, he said.

Six people were initially listed in critical condition, fire officials said. A seventh person suffered minor injuries, as well as a firefighter and a paramedic.

Four of the injured, including a 71-year-old man, later died, police said. One of the other victims was a man and the other two were women.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Lithium-ion batteries that power e-bikes and scooters “are igniting with some regularity and in increasing numbers,” reported The Washington Post. National Fire Protection Association as they say. The association also says batteries are known to cause explosions. Also, the fumes from batteries can be toxic, experts say.
