Honolulu (KHON2) — The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) rescued a 23-year-old kayaker by rowing to Mokuny Island off Lanikai Beach on Wednesday, September 15, after becoming ill.

HFD said Wednesday at 5:13 pm, after arriving at Mokunui Island, a 911 call was received to report that the kayaker was suffering.

According to HFD, a 23-year-old man got sick while rowing with his male companion. According to HFD, the woman was unable to return to Lanikai Beach and called HFD Dispatch.

HFD’s Air1 rescue helicopter responded, and firefighters first arrived at 5:22 pm to establish command and set a landing zone at Lanikai Community Park.

The rescue helicopter inserted personnel at the kayaker’s location and was packaged and airlifted in the landing zone of Lanikai Community Park at 5:58 pm.

The HFD reported that the female companion had successfully rowed on the shore.
