Kansas City, Missouri — KC Tenants announced eight requests on Saturday. They say this helps cancel rent debt and provide a solution to the rental assistance program in Kansas City, Missouri.
The group announced its request during a rally at the Manual Technical Center on 1215 E Truman Road.
“This year I worked at Community LINC and helped process other tenants’ rental assistance applications that I’m experiencing, so I was able to see the other side of the rental assistance.” Said Leslieborn, KC Tenant Leader, in part. Press release. “There weren’t enough staff, the number of tenants applying for help was astronomical, and workers were drowning in the application.”
On request, the group called on the city to work with KC tenants in outreach activities to give people access to rental assistance programs.
They also called for simplification of the application process and for transparency from the city on how rental grants would be used. This includes the release of weekly reports.
The KC tenant also states that the unused relief fund should be used to pay for the evacuation decisions that have already been made.
KCMO also requires landlords to be prohibited from discriminating against tenants for eviction of peasants during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In June Proposed group The new request, announced Saturday as the “People’s Housing Trust Fund,” again calls on Mayor Brian Pratt to implement the fund.
The group said it emailed Pratt a request and called on him to meet with the group within the next two weeks.
KSHB 41 News contacted the city for comment on the request from the KC tenant.
A spokeswoman pointed out the efforts already undertaken by the city, including the Emergency Assistance Center.
They also said the city distributed nearly 80% of its initial emergency rental assistance to tenants.
The city hopes that the support center will help distribute the funds in the second round.
“We urge the landlord to help tenants fill out online applications and provide them with the necessary documents quickly and easily,” a spokeswoman said in an email. “The city has a productive partnership with KC tenants and looks forward to discussing all the ways to better serve the community.”
