The US Coast Guard has resumed operations in Kenosha all year round.
The station, located on Simmons Island in the city, held a formal recommissioning ceremony on Friday, September 17, 2021. Senior Sergeant Eric Wiezolek rescues Senior Sergeant Darrell Strickland. Wieczorek commands the unit as an officer.
Station Kenosha was discontinued as a full-time operating station in September 2017. For the past four years, boat crews from Station Milwaukee have been between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
The change to full-year operation is based on longer response times to assistance during non-operational periods in this part of Lake Michigan.
The plan is to make this station function as the main unit of the Coast Guard’s response to search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, and ice rescue in the area.
