Las Vegas health and tourism authorities are tracking the development of the deadly coronavirus Omicron variant, including its potential impact on travel to Las Vegas.
However, the unknowns are so far higher than the known ones. Primarily, the infectivity and severity of new strains first identified in Africa and emerging worldwide. Health officials are also still assessing how effective existing vaccines are against new variants.
No US cases have been identified so far, but federal health officials say it’s only a matter of time.
“This is what we are watching carefully, but we are not guessing about the future,” added Virginia Valentine, president of the Nevada Resorts Association.
“The best protection remains vaccination,” Valentine said, reflecting the position of Nevada health authorities and Governor Steve Sisolak. “Eligible individuals who have not been fully vaccinated and boosted should be vaccinated as soon as possible.”
In a Twitter post, Sisorak said state officials are monitoring cases of variants and call the vaccine an “incredibly effective tool.”
About 54.4% of Nevadans are completely vaccinated against COVID-19.
A spokeswoman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said, “until it is better known and understood by medical professionals,” it is “premature to tell” what the effects of the variant will be.
Brian Labus, a UNLV epidemiologist and governor’s medical adviser, said that the Omicron variant “is concerned because there are so many mutations. This could mean something wrong. There is, but we don’t know. ” Does that really mean something wrong? “
He warned against jumping to conclusions and continuing to take protective measures, such as people wearing masks and social distances.
The Omicron variant is also on the radar of the Las Vegas event organizer.
Jamie Kaplan, a spokesman for the Consumer Technology Association, which holds the annual event January CES Gadget Show“We are actively tracking new news and science about new Omicron variants,” the organizer said.
“It’s too early to determine the impact of this latest variant, but we will continue to monitor and coordinate our plans and health protocols as needed,” says Kaplan.
The confusion of the new variants occurs when Las Vegas returns from a complete shutdown last year. The virus has eroded the tourism economy and pushed Las Vegas unemployment to record levels.
