Las Vegas (FOX5)-Las Vegas police said Monday that the 1979 murder suspect was also the 1983 cold case murderer.
On December 31, 1983, police said 22-year-old Diana Hanson was reported missing and later found dead near Spring Mountain Road and Buffalo Drive.
According to Lieutenant Ray Spencer in the LVMPD murder, Hanson was sexually assaulted and DNA was recovered from her body. Police took the lead after her death, but could not identify her murderer.
Last week, police announced that they had resolved the 1979 killing of a western high school student, identifying her murderer as Johnny Peterson.
Following that discovery, police received additional information about Peterson’s involvement in Hanson’s murder. Authorities compared the DNA in both cases, leading to the discovery that Peterson was Hanson’s murderer.
Peterson died in 1993 and will not be prosecuted.
