Las Vegas (KTNV) — Can you spell “comeback”? SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee is back for the first time in a year with Covid-19. This year, Las Vegas can support local spellers!

A student at the Nasri Academy for Gifted Children, Sriya Wint has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete nationwide at SCRIPPS Spelling Bee.

“I did my first spelling bee in sophomore, but I misspelled the word pumpkin. I still remember this. I remember how important pronunciation was over the years and spelled it out. I’ve learned just how important it is and pay attention to what you’re saying, “said Sriya Wint.

This isn’t the first time she’s been in the Scrips Spelling Bee, and she’s in the 2018-2019 Bee, finishing eighth in the state.

She didn’t make it to first place, but she kept it.

“I announced it again in 2020, but I couldn’t continue there because it was canceled because of Covid-19. So this year I’m going through the state and finally to the country’s spelling bee!”

Sriya appreciates the support of her parents for helping her study and coach her throughout the process, wherever she is.

“I often practice alone, but most of the time I’m trying to watch a TV show at home or on my way to and from school,” says Sriya.

This year, we’ve added a “word-meaning round,” which is more competitive than in the last few years and gives Spellers the opportunity to show off their skills with a microphone.

Syrian moms and dads, Tricia Coffey and Dylan Wint, are confident she will be successful this year, despite the additional obstacles.

“I’m proud of the work she did and her calmness under pressure. The last round she participated in went back and forth between her and the penultimate player. She stayed there and did a really good job, “said Dylan Wint.

Her mom is just as proud. “I’m very proud. It’s a lot of fun. It’s nice to see her not stressed. There’s a lot of support and people are always helping her by spelling words. Is exciting. Teachers and school, everyone is rooting for her. “

Sriya will qualify on June 12th and then in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

The Top 10 to 12 Spellers will be competing in the Scrips National Final on July 8th at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. Syria says it couldn’t reach this point without family support or by giving up.

“I didn’t fail because I can keep trying everywhere, even if I lose occasionally, or if I’m in 2nd, 5th, or 8th place. There’s always something else. So keep spelling and reading. It’s very helpful just to recognize the word, pay attention to the surrounding words, and not stop trying, “says Sriya Wint.
