Latest Coronavirus: Biden calls on governor to “weaken” his plans to boost vaccination

Florida may purchase monoclonal antibody treatments directly from GlaxoSmithKline, Governor Ron DeSantis said.

DeSantis spoke with GSK executives Thursday, saying Florida could “potentially order” the dose of its monoclonal antibody drug. “I will do it if possible,” he added.

Last month, the state launched a monoclonal antibody treatment center and mobile unit as part of an effort to prevent people infected with the coronavirus from developing more serious symptoms that require hospitalization.

The Department of Health and Human Services recently made changes to the distribution of monoclonal antibodies after Joe Biden promised the federal government to increase shipments by 50% overall. White House spokesman Jen Psaki said Thursday that the government’s supply of regeneron treatment “believes that it should be fair throughout the state, not unlimited.”

According to Psaki, seven states, including Florida, account for 70% of orders.

However, as a result of the change, shipments to Florida will not be available. drop According to DeSantis spokesman Christina Pushaw, there are 72,000 to 30,950 treatments per week.

The governor spoke at the Fort Lauderdale Health Center, saying Florida could use its own potential supply of GSK’s monoclonal antibody drug called sotrovimab to “address the shortage.”

“We were here throwing a big curve ball with tremendous cuts from the HHS and the Biden administration,” DeSantis said.

Data show that the number of people admitted to Covid-19 in Florida has declined in recent weeks, a promising sign following the summer wave of viruses caused by the delta mutation. Officials said Thursday that state-wide aggregates of Covid-19 patients in hospitals had declined for 24 consecutive days.
