Elf Elte, Spain (AP) —A huge river of lava slowly but relentlessly flows toward the sea after a volcano erupts on La Palma, Spain, in northwestern Africa.

Lava is destroying all of its path on Monday. However, quick evacuation helped avoid casualties after the eruption on Sunday.

Scientists have recently been monitoring the area, mostly in the midst of a surge of small earthquakes.

According to the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute, lava was moving at 2,300 feet per hour.

Officials said they expected to reach the Atlantic Ocean around sunset.

Lava left a black band of destruction in the lush, lush countryside, destroying about 100 homes.

Authorities have warned that parts of the island’s southwest coast are at risk of landslides and rockfalls.

The last eruption of La Palma occurred 50 years ago and lasted more than 3 weeks. Associated Press found.
