The studio focuses on up to three sites each year.
According to the course description, the goal of the larger project is to provide an affordable, multi-purpose project that will help meet the needs of the community and help retain, recall and attract new residents. “This project has the ability to show long-term residents a successful path to sustaining communities in the face of urban transformation.”
The studio and initiative borrow its name from the central figure in the Hebrew Scriptures of Nehemiah. This explains his work in the reconstruction of Jerusalem during the Second Temple period in Jewish history.
The 2021 Curriculum Innovation Award was awarded to a project at the University of California, Irvine. Columbia University; and Future Generations University.
