Tropical Cyclone Nicholas became a hurricane on Monday night and landed northeast of Matagorda Bay early Tuesday, bearing the brunt of the destruction of the coastal bend.

The storm was downgraded to a tropical cyclone around 10 pm after landing about 10 miles west-southwest of Sargent Beach, Texas. According to the National Meteorological Service, it will move northwest at 8 miles per hour and will continue to weaken for the next few days.

Nicholas is expected to reach a tropical depression by Wednesday morning.
