Albuquerque, New Mexico (KRQE) – One of Albuquerque’s oldest theaters has officially reopened. The Robo Theater was a church for nearly 20 years, but is now being used again for its original purpose of entertainment.
Opened in 1938, the Historic Robo Theater in Central near Girard is now acquiring a new lease. “You can eat here and have a good drink here,” said J. Richard Rivas, owner of the Robo Lounge and Event Center.
The theater has been used for church worship for nearly 20 years. “The pandemic and everything else, they’re gone,” Rivas said. “We had the opportunity.”
Rivas has been working on the renovation of the venue 83 years ago since April. He added a full-fledged bar with food, a new sound system and lights, giving it a noir feel of the ’40s.
Major renovations have been made this year, but not all are new. Rivas designed the venue around an old mirror of a women’s toilet that has been there since the building first opened.
Robo will be performing the Night of the Living Dead and the Rocky Horror Picture Show next Saturday night.
