In 2014, Elena Flores began sewing as a hobby to help shape her love for Mexican culture into an art form.

Before Flores knew it, she attended several sewing classes and opened an online shop.

In 2021, Flores did something she didn’t expect — she opened a store full of work in her beloved community.

Flores opened a new Sew Bonita storefront at Hamlin Shopping Center in early November.

Opening a store with her art “has been a dream so far,” Flores said. “But my goal has always been to open a store someday.”

As the online Sew Bonita shop gained momentum, Flores began to see its goals get closer and closer.

“(My husband and I) were working together towards our dreams, just waiting for the right place to save money and pop up something that would just be traffic friendly. “Flores said. “Everything went well.”

After spending the past seven years among many artists in the Corpus Christi community, Flores wanted to portray the beauty her shop saw in Coastal Bend.

“I love the creative community I’m in,” Flores said. “So I’m so grateful that I wouldn’t be here without it, whether it’s a customer or another creative companion, just being among the people who support me.”

Flores, who moved from Eagle Pass to Corpus Christi in 2001, realized that her art was the best way to express her Mexican-American culture to the community.
