Kansas City, Missouri (KCTV)-Kansas City writers make their debut in the comics world and tell stories that help bring inclusiveness and diversity to the genre.
In the world of manga, new writers are writing new chapters. LL McKinney is one such author and her project will be on the shelves this month.
“This is my first graphic novel and my first foray into the world of comics,” she said.
McKinney is writing a novel for young adults from his home in the Kansas City area. She has always been a fan of superheroes, but when it comes to people in color, she knows that the comics industry needs more expression.
“If I had to be told why it was important, I didn’t get anything for you,” she said. “The rest of us are on the way.”
That’s why she partnered with artist Robin Smith to create a graphic novel that revisited Wonder Woman’s twin sister, DC Hero Nubia.
“I wanted to be this warrior who could go to the toes with the champion of Themyscira,” McKinney said.
Nubia has appeared many times since its debut in 1973, but is usually treated as a side character. McKinney’s book gives her depth.
“I just wanted to bring her forward as a character, which we gave to all the other heroes,” McKinney said. “This was an opportunity to get to know Nubia as a person.”
Her book is called Nubia: Real One. Investigate harassment and racism issues through the lens of teenage superheroes.
“When I’m given the opportunity to talk about superheroes, I’m going to give those kids this hero who is influenced by what influences their lives,” McKinney said.
McKinney’s lines, along with stunning artwork by Robin Smith, develop Nubia as a complete character-a teenager with loved ones and friends.
“I have a lot of love and a lot of laughter,” McKinney said.
It’s a story she wants to influence the next generation of readers and writers.
“These children need to be protected, loved and given the opportunity to know who they are without the dangers imposed on them in this world. It is absolutely unnecessary,” McKinney says. I did.
Nubia: Real One will be available on February 23rd.
