Virginia Beach, Virginia (WAVY) — The economy has not yet recovered from the pandemic, despite the decline in coronavirus cases. Food insecurity remains very real.
Leaders held a drive-through food pantry at the Veterans United Mortgage Amphitheater in Virginia Beach on Tuesday afternoon, giving hungry residents access to fresh food in a socially distant way.
A car with fresh food on a first-come, first-served basis for a drive-through style of mobile food pantry.
Providing fresh produce and commodities is one way leaders want to address food insecurity in this community.
“I needed it,” said Kenji Blade.
Blade said she only spent 30 minutes waiting in line on Tuesday, but she says spending 30 minutes makes a difference.
“I’m an elderly person. I haven’t worked since last March, so I’m running out of money,” he said.
She needs a little extra help when it comes to eating, like hundreds of other families who stopped by the Veterans United Mortgage Amphitheater in Virginia Beach on Tuesday. Virginia Beach Human Resources has jumped at the idea of helping.
“It’s part of the population we serve in Human Services. I think the SNAP Benefits Program is just one part of what we’re doing and an extension of that work,” Virginia Beach Human Services said. Brian Clark of the department said.
They began preparing for a major food drive on Tuesday at food banks and the Eastern Shore in southeastern Virginia a few weeks ago. Looking at all the food packed in the car on Tuesday, their efforts have run its course.
“It’s two types. I’m happy that you can be part of something to help these individuals and families, but it’s also a clear reminder of where we are,” Clark said. Said.
A blade-like situation.
“I lost my job because of COVID, yes,” Blade said.
But she also said that receiving food on Tuesday was the relief she needed.
“It was stressful, but this was a blessing, and then the Lord was blessed, and as you know, there are so many programs and things. So really to the resources available and offered. I am grateful, “she said.
