Las Vegas (KLAS) — September is Starvation Month, and parent company Nexstar is working with Feeding America to combat this month’s hunger, with local food bank ThreeSquare as a member.
“Happiness. We have food that is the main thing,” student Yasmin Lopez Fernandez told 8NewsNow.
Eighteen-year-old Yasmine Lopez knows that he has food at home, so he can see a smile behind his mask. It’s all thanks to the efforts of Clark County School District and community partners.
“We get help at school and our food winners give us a bag of food with fruits, vegetables and bread,” Yasmine adds.
Currently, 10 sites around the Las Vegas Valley offer meals to students from the USDA exemption, which offers free breakfast and lunch, according to CCSD nutritionist Christina Saheb.
Her weekly service also includes meals for distance learning students.
“When creating breakfast and lunch menus, try to follow the pattern. It contains protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and milk,” says Sahib.
She also says that children between the ages of 2 and 18 are eligible regardless of whether they are CCSD students or not.
Currently, there are over 100 student food distribution sites across the valley.
According to Three Square, the pick-up area is an essential service as one in three children in the valley is experiencing food insecurity.
“That doesn’t mean the child is hungry. We know many times that parents prioritize food for their children over their own food because their families are at risk. That means the kids are at risk, “says Jody Tyson of Three Squares.
About £ 1 million of food is delivered daily to CCSD’s food service facility near Speedway.
Here, food is produced and sealed for most elementary schools. Secondary schools, on the other hand, order food in bulk and prepare it on-site for people in need, such as Lopez.
“They even give us turkey for Thanksgiving. We have a complete meal,” says Fernandez.
In addition to distributing food, Three Square requires donations.
The four corner food drive radio tones are in progress and will run until Friday.
Click donation is possible here.
For every dollar donated, three meals will be provided to each person.
