Corpus Christi, Texas — Gasoline bills can now dent your wallet, and it includes drivers who make special deliveries that community people depend on. Coastal Bend Food Bank says KRIS6 News’ petrol prices are delaying multiple deliveries. Recently, the organization’s gas costs have increased by 40%.
At Corpus Christi’s Catholic Charities, organizers have seen an increase in the number of people in need. Demand increased 58% this year and increased 30% last month. Organizers expect it to continue to rise. Kimberly Corcol, a client of the Catholic Charities Food Pantry, said she would receive food every week.
“They serve good things like ribs and steaks, but you have to wait in line for a while, but it’s worth it,” Corkol said.
Corkol has attended The Choice Food Pantry in Corpus Christi’s Catholic Charities since the outbreak of the pandemic. Korcol said he couldn’t imagine going anywhere else.
“I’m crazy about going to the food bank,” Corkol said.
Elma Ortiz, director of crisis relief and self-sufficiency, recorded the number of new clients passing through the food pantry. Compared to May 2021, when 270 families registered last month, 722 families received support from the food pantry. This means that more than 450 people need more help than they did a year ago. The goal now is to keep up with demand.
“We’re always looking for where to get our food. Where we might receive donations, where we can order to be here right away,” Ortiz said.
When food begins to run out, Ortiz asks the Coastal Bend Food Bank for help. I have a phone call to development coordinator Robert Morales.
“A little over 960,000 meals were served to our coastal bend area,” Morales said.
Morales adds that Coastal Bend Food Bank is always looking to meet demand. More resources So they can provide everyone with nutrition as well as food. Coastal Bend Food Bank delivers regardless of gas prices, with drivers unloading food in 11 county service areas.
