Local group helps prepare dogs for back to school – Tampa, Florida

Summer vacation is over and it’s time for the students to go back to school, but we’re talking about dogs, not children.

Kelly Hodges runs “Kids and Canines,” a program where dogs go to local schools and children read to them.

“The overall goal is to help children who are behind in reading. I mean years behind in their reading. It doesn’t matter how many mistakes they make.” Hodges explained.

Every year, she said, the program hosts summer camps for dogs. This helps keep your dog’s training up to date so it’s ready for school use in the same way your students are preparing for the coming year.

Julia Russo is in her fifth summer helping out at camp. She hopes to become a veterinarian one day, so she said this would be perfect for her.

“I submitted an application to Vet High School and it’s on my application. I feel like that’s what has pushed me forward so far,” Russo explained.

Over the past five years, “Kids and Canines” has grown from serving 15 children in one school to now serving over 1,500 local students.

Sitting down and having a dog read to you may not seem like a “transformation,” but Hodges said it certainly is.

Most of the children targeted by this program have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Many people have trust issues, and a dog that sits or lies quietly next to children while reading can help improve many of them.

“We’re not only changing the attitudes of our children, but we’re teaching them a skill set and helping them build trust. Again, it’s so much more than spending time with dogs,” says Hodges. said.

She added: It allows those children to blossom and develop the social skills to succeed. ”

“Kids and Dogs” will be held at several schools this year.Learn more about volunteering with groups and how to donate here.
