Nashville, TN (WSMV)-As part of Black History Month, a local organization is working to break the stigma of the black mental health community.

TN Voices says it’s important for people in the black and brown communities to manage their mental health, given everything that’s been done over the last 12 months, and that’s how you feel. It starts with letting people know.

Kara James-Johnson leads a non-profit organization that works with black and brown girls on mental health, but also receives treatment to help her own mental health.

“Especially in our culture, we are told to pray and just deal with it. This is normal and this means strong,” said James Johnson. “We need a space that is safe, speaks out loud about what we are experiencing, and allows professionals to enter and walk through, so that we can be freed, refreshed, and feel healthy.”

Will Voss, Chief Operating Officer of TN Voices, says breaking stigma begins with education and ends with sharing.

“Through our social marketing and outreach efforts, we were able to not only promote the importance of knowing which signs are symptoms, but also ensure that we recognize how to seek help,” he said. Said. “We are hiring individuals who have been involved in this journey and can join the community and talk to others. Like I navigated this system well. I struggled. We have overcome or are working to overcome the struggle. “

James-Johnson hopes the Black and Brown community will keep this message in mind.

“In times of stress and trauma, it is highly recommended to seek professional help to do it,” she said.

TN Voices has a Hope Fund that can provide free treatment to uninsured people.
