Candle lighters for cancer children support families of cancer children and teens
Portland, Oregon (KOIN) — Cancer diagnosis can be catastrophic. As a teenager, it can be shocking — not just for teens, but for the whole family.
Candle lighter for children with cancer A non-profit organization that continues to support these families during the pandemic. With a new virtual fundraising activity, the organization aims to raise thousands of dollars to help people like Lydiatam and her family.
“She was in her second year of high school and was very motivated,” said Lydia’s mother. “But that spring she was always tired.”
Lydia was found to have a brain tumor.
“I’ve always been the healthiest person in my family,” Lydia said. “It really shocked us all.”
Lydia’s family moved from Eugene’s home to Dawn Betcher Children’s Hospital for treatment. That was when they were introduced to Candlelighters.
“The first thing you see when walking in a room is a stuffed animal on the bed, tagged as a gift from the Candlelighters for Children with Cancer,” she explained. “The first thing I thought was,’This is a great bedside buddy,’ and’This is a gift I can give to my sister, who was five at the time.'”
Candlelighters ensure that the entire family is cared for during cancer treatment of their children. The organization supports everything from food to gas, financial support by paying rent and mortgages, to special events that connect families with cancer.
Lydia’s story can be found in this month’s Cancer Warrior Fundraiser video:Illuminate the roadWants to raise $ 75,000 for a nonprofit organization.
Lydia is currently a cancer-free, medical student at Stanford University, and some of her scholarships are funded by candle writers. She plans to pay it in advance and become a pediatric oncologist.
“I want to be someone who can give back and take care of children with brain tumors,” Lydia said.
