Wichita, Kansas (KSNW) — September 15th is the first day of Hispanic Cultural Heritage Month.
This month, KSN will focus on the stories of people who are changing lives in our community. KSN news reporter Andrea Herrera talks about how a man pays for it in spite of his hardships.
José López is a PE teacher at John Marshall Middle School in Wichita. He has been teaching there for 17 years. But it was only recently that Lopez found a new love for his work and helped those in need.
“I only play my small role in helping the situation,” Lopez said.
It all started with a conversation that led to a bigger debate.
“As a teacher, you can read books, see your child’s personality, and see what’s happening and what’s a little different about that child,” Lopez said. rice field.
Lopez was aware of recent changes in student attitudes. One day he sat down with his child and asked what was happening.
“He was telling me what was going on and what happened,” Lopez said.
The student lost his father due to deportation, and his family had to rapidly sacrifice some from their lives.
“What he loved,” Lopez said. “He loves soccer and couldn’t do it anymore.”
At that time, the idea blossomed. After contacting the student coach and his league, Marshall Junior High School teachers realized that he needed as much help as he could get.
“Why don’t one of the teachers start selling shirts and make money by doing it,” Lopez said.
An ironic expression of affection, “Bien Burro U,” is labeled on a T-shirt that helped Marshall junior high school students raise enough money to stay in their favorite sport.
“Someone did it for me at some point in my life,” Lopez added.
Now he is prepaying it by helping other children who may not be so lucky.
“You are not doing it for gratitude, you are doing it because they need help.”
Lopez says he wants to continue helping John Marshall Middle School students for years to come.
