Las Vegas (KLAS) — After overcoming closures and restrictions, the restaurant is addressing another issue. It’s a shortage of staff.
8 News Now went to the Lotus of Siam, which had to close its Sahara base due to an ongoing issue. According to management, we want to fill almost every position.
“That was the most difficult decision we had to make,” said Courtney Barnett.
She helps manage the Lotus of Siam and its small staff.
“It was manageable at 25%, but it was manageable at 50,” Barnett said. “That made it difficult to keep full operation.”
She explains that labor shortages are not due to lack of effort. Public interviews are held three days a week and job listings are published online.
“People showed interest, but no one appeared,” Burnett said.
She says a local restaurant is in a wage war with the Las Vegas Strip.
“It’s hard to compete with strip prices, so we’re all trying to bow down and do as much work as we can,” Burnett said. “But it’s really hard to find someone to help. is.”
It’s not just the Lotus of Siam.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Mark Steele, owner of the Restaurant Hospitality Institute (RHI), told 8 News Now.
He is currently partnering with nonprofits such as Chosen for Success to accelerate his training. The traditional 4-week course has been shortened to 1 week to fill the position. Participants will receive a South Nevada Health District Food Handling Card and Alcohol Consciousness Card from RHI.
“People looking for qualified candidates make the phone ring like crazy,” Steele said.
He hosts job fairs that connect trainees with restaurants, and some start on that day. According to Steele, this won’t go away overnight, but it will help ease the pressure on local businesses.
“Sadly, I don’t think we’ll see the end,” he lamented. “But we want to close the gap with these nonprofits and those who want to work.”
The Restaurant Hospitality Institute will hold a job fair this Friday. From now on, I would like to hold it every two weeks.
