Get ready for a stylish and quick coastal trip.
Boston-based startup REGENT is developing a zero-emission, high-speed coastal transport vehicle, the Sea Glider. Up to 50 passengers can travel within 180 mph at a maximum speed of 180 mph. The company expects the flagship vehicle to transport travelers in 2025.
REGENT was founded by two MIT graduates, Billy Thalheimer and Mike Klinker, who have extensive experience in aircraft design.
“Our mission is to significantly reduce the cost and headaches of regional transportation between coastal cities,” the website says. “Our vehicle, called a sea glider, is a ground-effect aircraft that operates a few meters above the surface of the water and combines the high speed of an airplane with the low operating costs of a boat.”
According to the report from CNBC, REGENT plans to connect hubs like Boston and New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco with short routes like New York City to Humptions and the Hawaiian Islands.
According to REGENT, sea gliders are half the cost of a typical aircraft, six times faster than a ferry, and all less noisy. The REGENT is considered a new type of vehicle, so the “sea glider” is not capitalized. The actual model name has not yet been announced.
REGENT has received a $ 465 million tentative order from airlines and ferry companies in the first quarter of 2021 alone and plans to fly a quarter-scale prototype by the end of the year. This website lists launch partners in the Bahamas, Caribbean and Croatia.
According to CNBC, the company is planning its first flight in the Boston area, but is looking elsewhere for testing in light of the harsh local winters.
“By the end of this year, we plan to fly a quarter-scale prototype,” Talheimer told CNBC. “The prototype has a wingspan of about 15 feet and weighs about 400 pounds. We need to make sure it works in typical production environments, such as waves and different weather conditions.”
Mark Cuban, owner and tech investor of the Dallas Mavericks, is one of the investors behind the Sea Glider.
“Using Regent makes coastal transportation 100 times more efficient. There is no other way to explain it,” he said. CBS Boston In a statement. “The idea of having to move between two coastal points is always stressful. Regent changes it all, making it quick and easy.”
