“The fact that your neighbor may have it and you have no clues? I think it’s time to start talking about it so that people don’t feel so lonely,” says Marissa Cardenas. I did.

Marissa Cardenas is a senior at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. She was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 10.

Her middle school days were nothing more than unusual.

When diagnosed, Cardenas spent a year all in the hospital finding the right medication to control her migraines and seizures.

Cardenas says few people understand the type of isolation and fear she once felt when trying to explain her disability to her peers.

“I need to tell people about my safety, but I don’t know how people will react, so that’s the burden.”

It wasn’t until she found the Epilepsy Foundations in Colorado and Wyoming that she felt understood that she became an advocate of awareness.

“It’s probably the most changing thing in my life. It got me out of my shell.”

Cardenas attended their camp, where she met other children like her.

Eleven years later, Cardenas has the opportunity to lead the camp and help children in the same fight as before.

“You may have to take it differently than others, but in the long run, you can do anything with just a change to suit your lifestyle,” Cardenas said.
