When a hit-and-run driver collided with a guard’s hut, a guard known for greeting people in a long beach estate with a gentle smile and waves was attacked and killed on Saturday.
Residents, many of whom are familiar with the guards, said the guards were in his guard hut when he was attacked by an SUV. The details of the crash were not immediately known.
The guards always greeted with a gentle smile, said the sad residents.
“He was a good person,” said the resident. “Everyone here liked him. Everyone knew him. He would brighten your day. He had a real, real smile.”
The guards worked for several years in a Century Village home. The complex, located in 2000 blocks on River Avenue, provides short-term and permanent housing for endangered people and veterans.
The guard was not identified by the authorities.
“Every time I came here, he waved and smiled,” said one woman. “He was kind to everyone.”
The guard hut was destroyed in the crash. According to officials, the driver apparently escaped from the scene.
“I heard a crash, but I thought it was a train,” said one witness. “It looked like a little tornado.”
