Virginia Beach, Virginia (WAVY) — Virginia Beach’s Lynn Haven Dive Center has begun construction for a new state-of-the-art diving and swimming training facility.
A groundbreaking event was held on Wednesday afternoon. The new 9,000-square-foot aquatic center will be built behind the existing Linhaven Dive Center on 2204 Poplar Point Road.
The new facility features one of the deepest private diving pools at a depth of 15 feet and a separate area for swimming school instructions. In addition, the facility will host new classrooms, technical gear repair centers, and rental gear lockers.
Visitors and parents can sit in the glass lobby area and watch the children take swimming lessons.
According to the authorities, this expansion is a “five-year strategic goal” to support the community, indicating the need for swimming programs and technical scuba diving training in the area.
The new building is called Big Mike’s Aquatic Center to commemorate Mike Hillier, who died in 2021 after 18 years of fighting cancer. Hillier shared his passion for diving and water with everyone he knew and served the community for over 45 years.
