Mike Barras is deeply saddened by his neighbor Christopher Arias and his family. His house is now rubble.
When they began to deal with the tragedy, we walked the scorched property with Aria and his teenage daughter.
Arias says his son’s letterman jacket, hat and gown, his wife’s wedding ring, and his daughter’s childhood relics are gone.
The family is also looking for their beloved cat named Jackson.
Arias says they are mourning the loss of irreplaceable items while they are grateful that the rest of his loved ones are safe.
“Only a lot of memories,” he said. “You can’t get them back.”
A man living in the next street tells how nervous he and his wife were when the flames ran towards the neighborhood.
Jennifer Carrera also understands how close the danger has come to her home and many others.
“We have ashes everywhere in the pool and backyard,” she said. “It’s everywhere on our roofs and solar panels. It shows the distance the wind was carrying everything.”
Several neighbors shared concerns about the extra brushes on the riverbed behind the house.
“I think I was able to prevent this, which is a shame,” Arias said. “I don’t want other families to experience what we experienced last night.”
But Arias says he and his family will be rebuilt.
“This is not the end of the story,” he said. “We are really resilient. We have to keep fighting, moving forward, raising our heads, and staying positive.”
