The city of Mumbai, the capital city of the state of Maharashtra is dotted with several islands. The city is also popularly known as the city of seven islands.  All these islands are picturesque location for having fun with friends and family during holidays. One such island famous amongst the tourist folk is the Madh Island. The island is also a hub of movie shootings.

Madh Island has come up as a prominent weekend destination amongst the rich and elite of Mumbai. It houses several beach houses, farmlands and clean and serene beaches. This place is a good respite from the busy city life.

About Madh Island

Madh Island is bordered by the Arabian Sea on the west and the Malad Creek on the east. It is primarily inhabited by Kolis, Roman Catholics and Marathis. It is mostly a rural setting and has beautiful vistas, farmlands, villages etc. the Madh Island also houses the Madh Fort which is another major tourist destination. The island is known for the ancient fort. So, when on a visit to Madh Island a tourist gets an opportunity to explore nature as well as a famous historical structure.

Madh Island Beach

The Madh Island Beach is one of the regular laid back beaches in Mumbai. Though a bit mundane, the beach has its own beauty. It is surrounded by several tiny fishing villages nearby. The beach is clean and quiet. It is advisable to stay careful while on this beach as the waves are huge even during low tides. The silky smooth sand of this beach makes it a perfect place to have peaceful walks under the moonlight. Sunrise and sunsets are also mesmerizing in here. Tourist mainly come in here to enjoy the calmness of the beach and take a little sunbath.

Things to do when at Madh Island

In addition to the serene beach experience of this place there exists several other enjoyment options for the tourist to explore when at Madh Island. The Madh Island Fort is one among them. This fort was built in the 17th century by the Portuguese as a watching tower. The fortification is still intact but the interiors are in crumbles. Currently this fort is under the control of the Indian Air Force as it is close to it base. So, in order to visit the fort one has to take their permission. The Madh Island Fort in the earlier times served strategic and spectacular purposes. Today if one gets a change to visit the fort, the eternal spectacular beauty of this place can be very well seen and it is indeed a treat to one’s eyes.

The Madh Island Church is another popular tourist destination on this island. The church goes by the name, Our Lady of the Sea Church. It is mostly visited by locals. It is a splendid example of Portuguese architecture but is unfortunately in ruins now. But one must visit this structure when in here. This structure is a beautiful example of the glory of the bygone era. Though dilapidated, Our Lady of the Sea Church is full of the divine power of the supreme. When in here one can feel calmness seeping into one’s mind, body and soul.

When in here one should try associating and communicating with the locals residing here. They are friendly and will readily offer help and information regarding anything related to the island. This also gives the visitor an insight into the ways and lives of the locals here. This will definitely be an enriching experience.

A Tourist’s Guide

Madh Island is open all around the year. Entry is not ticketed here. One can reach this place either by roadways or by waterways i.e. by taking a ferry. The best time of the year to visit Madh Island is between the months of September and March. The weather is pleasant and thus, ideal for touring this place.

The nearest railway station from here is Malad Railway Station. The nearest airport from the island is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. One can readily find ferry service from Versova. For roadways one can opt for state run buses or one can hire a taxi, auto or a cab too. Stays in the resorts in here are very comfortable.

Thus, overall Madh Island is a wonderful tourist destination. It gives the tourist a taste of many things. Lovers of history, nature lovers, peaceful seekers, photography fanatics etc. will have an extra wonderful time in here.
