Omaha, Nebraska (KMTV) —Magic Johnson gave a keynote speech at the Empowerment Network’s 15th Anniversary Luncheon, changing lives at the CHI Health Center in downtown Friday afternoon.

A former NBA player and businessman, he was surrounded by people who cheered you up, knew when he was ready to grow his business, and talked about serving his customer base.

Johnson discussed the importance of investing in your community and put those words into practice by offering scholarships to Omaha teens.

“I went up there and started shaking. I was a kind of nervous star track. That’s a big deal,” said Darnell Jackson Jr. “That means a lot. I want to thank Magic Johnson, and I also want to thank God. That’s all to me now.”

18-year-old Jackson, who attends the MCC, said he attended a luncheon to hear the basketball legend speak, simply hoping for a meal. He never imagined the impact that day would have on his life.

Jackson’s family thanked Johnson.

Jackson’s grandfather Roscoe Wallace said, “Thinking about who Magic is, it surprised me. What he always does is help people, which is to my grandson. I was surprised to be. ”

Jackson’s family has experience of crime and violence in the past. The cycle they say was traumatic for the family.Darnell Jackson, Senior I talked to 3NewsNow before I hope his children will carry on the changes in his life over the past few years regarding his previous gang affiliation and time in prison. Now, with a scholarship from Johnson, he confidently knows that his son will not experience the same.

“It means everything in the world. All praise goes to God today just to know it stops. There were a lot of prayers. His abilities are everything, not gangsters,” Darnell said. Jackson Senior said.

“We had a lot of trauma and violence in the family, so I experienced it, my son experienced it, and this is his son. So we with him We’re trying to stop this domino together and for the magic. Doing it today adds so much to our family, not just from an economic point of view, “Roscoe says. I did.

The Jacksons aren’t the only ones who changed their lives on Friday afternoon. Business owners say they take Johnson’s words seriously and incorporate them into their perspective.

“I’m just used to taking mental notes to get home, so it’s going to really help,” said business owner Nataya Thomas. “Do it the right way, don’t take shortcuts, and invest in yourself, invest, make sure you invest, then rewind and try to live in your life and in its shadows. It must be correct. Everything must be done. It will be backed up. “

Willy Bernie, founder and CEO of Empowerment Network, is grateful that the Omaha community, which includes many members of the Black community, was able to hear the words of entrepreneurs.

“He was really encouraged by what he saw, the measurable results. He travels all over the country, so sometimes we live in Omaha and know that there is a problem. I We still have to tackle a lot of problems, but it’s really encouraging outside of someone reading and seeing the measurable results and results that are happening in the city — especially someone of that size. ” Bernie said.
