Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona (AP) — Authorities are looking for a Maryland man who has been reported missing in the Grand Canyon National Park.

Park officials said they received a report about a backpacker overdue near the Valhalla Plateau in Norslim, a canyon, around 9 pm on Tuesday.

Mount Airy’s 66-year-old Clifton “Cliff” Beck has obtained a backcountry permit for two nights in the Valhalla Plateau, they say. Beck is believed to be traveling alone and he was expected to leave the backcountry last Sunday.

The park ranger searched for Beck by plane on Wednesday but failed. The operation on Thursday will include the deployment of nine ground search teams and an aerial search by helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft in the Valhalla Plateau area.
