Aurora, Colorado — According to Aurora police, a man was detained after hitting an apartment building overnight with a bat and a hammer and throwing a knife from his troops to police.

At around 12:25 am on Thursday, a police officer at the Aurora Police Department screamed in the parking lot of the apartment and responded to reports of hitting the Sage Creek Apartments building at 1768 N. Billings St with a bat.

When police arrived at the scene, they learned that the man had pointed his gun at several residents, police said. When he saw the policeman, he got into the car and ran away. According to police, police officers followed him briefly before stopping due to safety concerns.

Shortly thereafter, the suspect returned to his apartment and was seen hitting a building with a hammer, so police were recalled. When the police returned, the man entered his apartment and refused to surrender to the police, police said.

Aurora SWAT was called to help the situation.

Police said at some point the suspect opened the door and threw several knives at the police. No one was injured.

After hours of negotiations, the suspect surrendered peacefully at 5:54 am. He was detained without incident.

No other details were available as of Thursday morning.
