Manhattan, Kansas (KSNT) — Manhattan police have detained a man after two fires were sentenced to arson on Monday, October 18.

Manhattan police chief Dennis Butler confirmed that Matthew Spooner, 36, was arrested on Monday after two fires in Aggieville. Firefighters responded to reports of an electric fire at 1200 blocks on Moro Street, but later determined that it was an arson.

According to the Riley County Police Department, Spooner threw what is commonly known as the Morotov cocktail at the O’Malleys Array on Moro Street. A 31-year-old woman was also listed as a victim by police. The total damage to O’Malley’s Alley was stated to be $ 950.

Later that day, firefighters were called to block 1100 on Laramie Street for a fire that authorities believed was arson.

A second Morotov cocktail was thrown into another building on Laramie Street at around 7:45 pm, officials said. The total damage was estimated to be less than $ 100. Officers named a 55-year-old man as a victim of Laramie Street.

Authorities had an explanation for the suspect and were looking for him all day long. According to Butler, witnesses to both fires described a man who looked like Spooner.

Police said they had arrested Spooner on suspicion of two exacerbations of arson and two criminal uses of explosives.
