Nashville, Tennessee (WTVF) — Ascension Saint Thomas West continues to show that Tennessee has the worst incidence of new COVID cases across the country. NewsChannel 5 Unprecedented access within today’s ICU units allows us to talk to someone who is still recovering from the effects of COVID but is no longer contagious.
From Lascasus, 44-year-old Joe Gammon pointed from his hospital bed to a collection of photographs on a poster board on the opposite wall.
“My wife made this collage,” Gammon said. “It’s my family, my beautiful family.”
The six fathers say he’s not a fan of the label.
For one thing, Joe says he never completely opposed the COVID vaccine.
“I’ve never been an anti-vaccine. I don’t believe in being an anti-vaccine. I don’t encourage people to be an anti-vaccine or be ashamed of someone just because they’ve been vaccinated,” Gammon said. Said.
He often listens to talk radio and says he has decided not to get the vaccine because he heard that he was short of COVID vaccine.
“I didn’t want to be the one who stands in front of those who need it more than I do,” Gammon said.
Of course, there was no shortage of COVID vaccines, especially in the second half of the pandemic.
Joe was finally infected with COVID two months ago.
“For an active 44-year-old man, I wouldn’t have expected me to enter this scenario,” Gammon said.
Gammon was removed from the ECMO machine on Tuesday morning. The machine essentially acts as an artificial external lung. This is a machine that medical professionals say most patients never get off.
But even if you’re one of the lucky ones, Gammon says he’s not going to tell you to go shoot. He says he knows how he feels when he is told what to do.
Instead, he’s asking, just go talk to your doctor.
“I think what I regret is that I didn’t go to the primary care physician’s opinion,” Gammon said.
Currently, Gammon is focusing on getting better for those who love him most.
“Think about your family,” Gammon said. “What would your family do if you had this illness and you didn’t? For me, leaving this world at the age of 44 with a wife who had to raise four daughters. I couldn’t imagine. It’s not fair. “
St. Thomas West Permit NewsChannel 5 To talk to several doctors and nurses working in the ICU.
Wednesday night NewsChannel 5 at 10Let’s take a closer look at ECMO machines. This includes why ECMO machines are being used more often to help people fighting delta variants, and the lack of nurses needed to run the machines throughout the midstate.
