Colorado Steamboat Springs (KDVR) — Colorado Park and Wildlife officials say a man was hospitalized after being attacked by a bear in his garage on Sunday night.

The landlord said he noticed that his garage door was open around 11:00 pm. He kept bird seeds and other attractants in the garage. According to CPW, when he tried to close the garage door, he encountered a sow and two kittens.

According to CPW, the man was attacked by a sow as he slowly tried to leave the garage.

The man was seriously injured in the attack and underwent surgery because of severe lacerations in his head and legs. CPW said he was expected to survive.

CPW’s wildlife officer and Park Ranger responded to the house and began searching for bears and cubs on Sunday night. The CPW team said they quickly found a sow near their house. The bear was euthanized and the carcass was sent to CPW’s Wildlife Health Lab for autopsy.

CPW said wildlife officials would stay in the area searching for two offspring. If found, police officers trap them and transfer them to a rehab facility.

“Unfortunately, this reminds us that we need to be vigilant and always’prepared’,” said Kyle Bond, wildlife manager in the CPW area. I will. “Easy access to food always defeats the natural fear of bears to humans, so we humans must always be careful to keep all food sources safe.”

According to CPW, this is the first bear attack in the Steamboat Springs area of ​​Colorado this year.
