Lincoln, Nebraska (AP) — A man with a long history of mental illness died in prison when he killed the grandfather of two Nebraska football players more than 20 years ago.
The Nebraska Correctional Services Department said in a news release that Russell Harms died Monday at the System Reception and Treatment Center in Lincoln. He was 64 years old.
Harms was in jail for 22 years after shooting down 84-year-old Tennie Son Kelsey in the parking lot of Auburn Shopping Center in 1999.
The older man was the grandfather of Chris Kelsay, the rush end of Nebraska at the time, and Chad Kelsay, a former Nebraska and Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker.
Harms was convicted of a primary murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, despite being diagnosed with delusional schizophrenia.
