Mansfield, Ohio (WJW) — Mansfield Police said they were investigating a shooting involving police officers on Wednesday night.

According to one announcement, police responded to a shooting on John’s Avenue after 6 pm and found a 22-year-old man being shot multiple times. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown.

While investigating the shooting, police were briefed by a 20-year-old male suspect. Shortly thereafter, police said police saw a man consistent with the suspect’s explanation of operating the vehicle.

Police tried to stop the vehicle in the areas of West 3-chome and Sycamore Avenue, but police said the vehicle had taken off and had been tracked.

Mansfield police said the suspect got out of the car and fled to Nishi 4-chome. The police caught up with the suspect, and police said, “During the subsequent struggle, the suspect pulled a gun, at which point the police fired. His weapon attacked the suspect.”

The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The release said police officers were slightly injured and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Officers who have been working in the department since 2018 have been on leave according to the department’s policy.

The investigation will continue.
