Corpus Christi, Texas — What do you do if an emergency, service, or utility vehicle is parked along the freeway? Or do you just ignore it and keep driving in the next lane?

Texas travel or deceleration requires you to move to the next lane or slow down to 20 miles below the posted speed limit. This has been a law since 2003, covering police, fire and EMS vehicles, but in 2019 it was expanded to utility vehicles such as tow trucks.

On Friday, the Bishop’s Police Department launched an operational moveover in partnership with Apollo Towing to test whether people actually comply with the law. In the first hour, they found at least 50 vehicles that did not comply with the law.

Anthony Samora was one of the officers on duty and issued a warning. He said he bumped into a moving vehicle while he was at a traffic stop, but that vehicle did not stop when his vehicle collided.

He said today was a good opportunity for people to learn about road rules.

“People sometimes forget, so I want to pay attention repeatedly,” he said.

The Bishop Police Department has made 46 traffic suspensions and issued 47 citations. They seized one car because the driver did not have his license, insurance proof, or registration.

“They are at risk in the lives of the officers you know by the side of the road while they are working, and we all get home safely at the end of the day. I hope to be back, “said Edward Day, chief of the Bishop’s Police Department.

Michael Staff, vice president of Apollo Towing, said tow truck drivers and trucks were frequently hit and drivers in the Kingsville area were recently hit.

“You have that anxiety, that is, is the next car paying attention? Are they going to hit me behind the ankle? They hit me by the side of this road and I Will I hurt him and send him to the hospital, or will he forbid him to be sent to the morgue, and I can’t see my family anymore, “the staff said.

Bishops’ police said they hope to have another educational experience in the near future, but they will not announce it in advance like Friday.
