Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — The first day of school reopening for the Marana Unified School District is Monday.

Many teachers prepare classrooms for groups of freshmen, but one teacher says that the school’s barn, greenhouse, and mechanic’s room are prepared for the next group wanting to learn a new profession. is confirming

Ashley Haller is in her ninth year of teaching at Marana High School. She teaches a variety of professions, from farming to welding to machinist.

“We own the animals that the school has purchased and the children can lease breeds to show at the Pima County Fair,” Haller said. “And students can also buy their own animals, which is an entrepreneurial learning project. can be sold for

Haller has been recognized as a CTE teacher by Senator Mark Kelly and the people of Capitol Hill. She received an advocacy award for her strong CTE program. She says that over the years of teaching agriculture, the town of Marana has grown and the farm has shrunk.

“Marana has changed a lot in the last nine years. When I first came here, there were a lot of farms,” Haller said. “There were a lot of traditional Ag students.”

Her job became all the more important, she says, as freshman Ag skills declined.

“During COVID, you realize that some of the really essential workers are skill trades, right?” Haller said. “You need someone to feed you, electricity, all those skills.”

Students can follow their passions, she says, from growing tomatoes to raising cattle.

“I have kids who have bees. I have kids who have gardens at home,” Haller said. “We have students who have dismantled trucks and rebuilt them. Restoring an old tractor is all a very unique project and one that will help you acquire these special skills and understand the path you want and the career you want. It helps.”

Haller encourages new students to learn the job by looking at the various CTE classes the school offers. She has several students who have turned her newfound skills into careers.
