Marion County, South Carolina (WBTW) – The MarCo Rural Water Company has recently been granted a loan of approximately $ 5 million to build a new water treatment facility.

The facility is one of two projects in the state paid on a rural development loan from the US Department of Agriculture this year.

“Our wells are at the end of their lives, as wells have a lifespan of about 25 to 40 years,” said Michael Hannah, president of Hanan Engineering. “It’s still working well every day, but I don’t want to start planning a replacement on the day it breaks down.”

The new facility will replace the old facility in Rains. The tower holds 500,000 gallons of water, compared to the old one, which holds only 200,000 gallons. It also includes an upgrade to Wellhouse.

“The well is on the ground outside the house, but the new well is inside,” said Robert Winkeler, General Manager of MarCo. With the funds in place, they began cleaning up the area where the new facility would be located.

Hannah expects it to be online in about a year and a half. He hopes it helps bring new business near Highway 501.

“One of the important things industrial developers want is fire protection,” Hannah said. “There is 500,000 gallons of elevated storage nearby, which is worth it to them.”

The loan must be repaid within 40 years. Winkerer said it’s still unclear if the new development will require higher user charges.

South Carolina is expected to spend an estimated $ 6 billion on improving drinking water infrastructure over the next 20 years, according to a 2021 report card on US infrastructure.
