Marelli and Punch form e-axle JV | Automotive Industry News

Marelli and Punch have reached an agreement to establish a joint venture focused on e-axle solutions.

The two companies combine their experience in the field of electric powertrains to provide integrated systems for EVs.

The Marelli-owned joint venture will focus on a system approach to an integrated e-axle solution. The company develops and assembles e-axle systems, targeting markets in Europe and the Americas.

The new company, Calsonic Electric Powertrain Strasbourg (France), will be headquartered at Punch’s site in Strasbourg, France, near European carmakers. The joint venture will have facilities for on-site production, prototyping, and testing.

E-axles is an important system for electric vehicles. Marelli supplies electric motors and inverters, including software for e-axles, while punches contribute to gearbox components and development, and manufacturing expertise.

“Punch and Calsonic’s strengths in the field of electric powertrains are a great match,” said Hannes Plen, EVP and CEO of Calsonic Electric Powertrains. “This collaboration further expands our offering as a complete system provider for electric powertrains, complemented by thermal and battery management solutions.”

Guido Dumarey, Founder and CEO of Punch, said: “Punch wants to be a major player in reduction gears as part of a complete e-axles, one of the key components of an electric vehicle.

“The partnership with Marelli is an enabler to accelerate and execute long-term strategies from fossils to electricity and ultimately to clean hydrogen powertrain systems.”
