Mask up in public indoors, NYC Health Chief urges – Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky

New York (AP) — New York City health officials are urging New Yorkers to wear masks in all indoor public environments as New York City approaches a “high-risk” COVID-19 alert condition.

Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan said on Monday that in environments such as grocery stores, offices and building lobbies, everyone should always wear a face cover.

He said people at high risk of serious viral illness, such as those over 65, should avoid crowded environments and unnecessary gatherings.

Advisories are recommendations, not obligations. New York City Mayor Erik Adams said he wasn’t ready to carry out a mandate at this time.

In New York City, an average of about 3,600 new cases of COVID-19 per day have been reported in the past week. This is probably an underestimate as it does not include a home test.
