Activists in hospital gowns gather on the steps of the Massachusetts State Capitol and say they can’t use $ 17 million out of about $ 5.1 billion in the Federal Pandemic Relief Fund to provide state legislators with the medical care they need. Encourage them to fill the gap.

The rally on Monday is organized by the Massachusetts Senior Action Council. Members encourage state legislators to expand their Medicare savings program to include people living on up to 200% of the federal poverty line, or about $ 2,146 per month.

Proponents said the program would help thousands of older people in Massachusetts save hundreds of dollars a month in health care. Activists who pushed the program to include 165% of federal poverty levels in the 2020 budget said thousands of unqualified older people were struggling.

According to the council, almost every elderly person in Massachusetts with a monthly income of less than $ 2,000 and no MassHealth or other support spends more than 20% of their income on Medicare premiums. According to activists, COVID-19 only put more elderly people in financial instability.

The protest is scheduled for 10 am.
